The highly acclaimed African Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCA 2017) has come and gone but there’s still so much more to talk about it. As expected, the red carpet was draped with glitters and sequins from fashionable actors an actresses across Africa. Amidst all the glitz and glamour, there were also  some fashion hits and misses; you’ve heard about the best dressed and worst dressed but we bring you something different. Here, we do a review of different fashion segments with contenders in each category; so join me let’s take a rundown of who slayed on the red carpet and who needs to check into a style rehab.

Match title: Battle of lace placement

Contenders: Chioma Akpotha vs Lillian Esoro

We love Choima Akpotha, cos she always looks like she isn’t trying too hard, but sometimes you gotta try a little bit harder, since dressing up like this isn’t something you get to do every day, she showed up at the AMVCA wearing a princess lace placement gown, the placement on Lillian’s dress looked more detailed, and dare we say neatly done.  So Lillian Esoro takes down Chioma Akpotha in Round 1.

Match title: Battle of the thigh high

Contenders: Somkele Idhalama vs Idia Aisien

Idia Aisien looks stunning in this blue thigh high dress and honestly, we can’t find any fault with the outfit except for the twins popping out because she accessorized it with the perfect jewelry and strap sandals . Somkele looks amazing; will love to take off that pump though and replace it with a lovely strappy sandals to make her legs look longer and sexy. From her neck up is giving me Imani Izzi in “Coming to America” vibes. The title of Thigh High Chic definitely goes to SOMKELE IDHALAMA.

Match title: Cinderella

Contenders: Toni Tones vs Nana Akua Addo

Two beautiful dresses but only one person gets to keep the title of AMVCA 2017 Cinderella, we totally heart Nana’s look, she looks amazingly gorgeous and comfortable wearing such a big dress, FLAWLESS is the word that comes to mind looking at her. Toni Tones on the other hand is absolutely breathtaking in her fuschia cinderella dress. For this round, TONI TONES is the winner because her dress drapes down really well unlike Nana who’s ball dress is a bit above the ground.

Match title: Golden Girl

Contenders: Sharon Ooja vs Rita Dominic

With the fashion statement Rita pulled last AMVCA, there was high expectations from her fans to see if she will break last year’s record but… let’s just say she looks good in the gold dress even though I still don’t understand the pop-out frills which did not align properly at the bottom. Sharon Ooja looks like a bag of royalty in this gold sequin dress; she is simple yet absolutely gorgeous. Simplicity is definitely the ultimate sophistication. The Golden Girl title goes to SHARON OOJA.

Match title: Fairy Princess

Contenders: Ini Dima-Okojie vs Toyin Abraham

Iniiiiiiiiii…… why so beautiful though? I’ll come back to you, let me talk about Toyin. Toyin’s dress is lovely and I like the gold touch of the belt and clutch; but she looks like she is choked and struggling to breathe. Without much thoughts, Ini is breathtaking and all shades of sass in her ball dress. I particularly love the purse she accessorized it with. For all these, Ini wins the title of Fairy Princess

Match title: Velvet Queens

Contenders: Bolanle Olukanni vs Uche Jumbo-Rodriguez

Hi uche…. All I can say is “how ya doing” (in wendy Williams voice) we see your effort to look pretty hence the pout that is so 2015. All I can say is, please take a cue from your colleagues when next you’re preparing for red carpet events because you’ve been smacked down  in this round ….. the obvious winner of this round is BOLANLE OLUKANNI.

Match title: Flower Girl

 Contenders: Adesua Etomi  vs Dija

Adesua Etomi’s flower dress just makes her look like one of these pretty little flower girls ushering a couple into a wedding. The dress designed by Mai Atafo is definitely not one of her best red carpet moments but when compared with Dija’s epic fail of a dress; I’m just speechless. Adesua Etomi wins the title of Flower Girl.

Match title: Black Swan

Contenders: Beverly Naya vs Meg Otanwa

You can never go wrong with a black dress. Meg Otanwa’s twins seems like they are struggling to fit into that dress; however, the outfit is simple and classy for the occasion. But you can’t compare it with the beautiful Beverly Naya ‘s halter neck peplum dress with gold embellishments. Simply gorgeous, the title of Black Swan goes to Beverly Naya.

Match title:The Drama Queen

 Contenders: Eku Edewor vs Arese

Isn’t this a big coincidence that they both chose the same colour for their outfit and same posture for their picture? Lolll, it seems drama queens have a thing for understanding each other. Eku has never disappointed us with her dramatic choice of outfits for red carpet events so we did not expect anything less. But Arese, words fail me to understand the coloured frills at the tail of this dress; it would have been a wise choice to stick to all white since the dress is already busy. For this, Arese wins the title for Drama Queen.

Match title: Breast Patch

Contenders: Susan Peters vs Shirley Igwe

All I see is the boobs patch work hideously done by I’m assuming the same designer, aside the bold color choice everything about these gowns just screams TACKY. Shirley will slightly be pardoned for having a flawless hair and makeup but Susan gets to check into a style rehab for those gloves cos it’s a total no no for this look. They both loose this round.

So guys that completes our rundown of the AMVCA smack down 2017.  Let us know what you think and tag anyone who you think gave a smackdown to someone else, we will love to get your input.
